Recently I have been working towards my entry for The Folio Society call for entries, a fabulously exciting opportunity to illustrate the short stories of Angela Carter. Those chosen are: The Bloody Chamber, Puss in Boots, and The Company of Wolves.
I must confess I had never read her work before although I have seen the film adaptation of her short story; The Company of Wolves, which is essentially a beautiful re-telling of the famous fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, but much darker and erotically charged.
Discovering her works has been a joy for me, her writing style is so beautiful, and she describes so immaculately the scenes but most notably the thoughts and feelings of her chief narrating character that you can completely emerse yourself in the moment. The most amazing thing about her writing from an illustrators' perspective is her ability to visually describe everything, as I read her work my mind races with images and emotions, almost as though I were watching a film.
It's for this reason that it was fairly difficult to pin myself down to one scene to illustrate from each story, but I based my decision on moments in the stories which focussed on the protagonist, and key turning points in their lives. For example in The company of Wolves, the moment in which Red Riding Hood discovers her Grandmother is dead, for me, was the key in the loss of her innocence and the scene is so dark and charged with emotional tension. I wanted to depict all the various elements that play a part in the overall picture; the mystery surrounding what has actually taken place, the characters' position with each other and the underlying looming presence of the wolf in the darkness who would change the path of Red Riding Hood's future forever.
I hope you enjoy my work as much as I did creating it.
Sarah Underwood Illustration
I am an award winning freelance illustrator focussing on children's book illustration, who is passionate about art, drawing and digital illustration. The majority of my work features animals and nature. Whilst I enjoy discovering new techniques, and mix digital with traditional, drawing underpins everything that I do. I love experimenting with colour; but it is rare that any piece doesn’t begin with a doodle on any piece of paper available at the time.
A bit about me
I grew up with a passion for the arts, film, and literature, since I was born into an artistic family, and cannot remember a time when I wasn't encouraged to draw, or make things.
In particular, my work is hugely influenced by colour, nature and an obsession with animals. I have strong visual skills and a desire to depict through my drawings images and scenes from my imagination and dreams. My biggest influences have been my memories of amazing books from my childhood, being constantly surrounded by artists' works from all areas and of course my love of drawing.
I have a degree from the Kent Institute of Art and Design specialising in Illustration as well as a distinction from Tower Hamlets College in Commercial Graphics and Digital Illustration where I studied art, Photoshop, Illustrator, Cinema 4D and After Effects.
I spent 10 years working in the publishing industry specifically in children's books were I was responsible for the Puffin children's book range at Penguin, 4th Estate at Harper Collins, the Colour and Activity range at Egmont Children's Books amongst others.
I am now pursuing a career in Children's book illustration which is where my passion lies.

Sketchbook work
Here are some snippets from my sketchbook over the past week for The Sketchbook Project 2012. I'm working on some studies for a book i've written, and character development for various other ideas swimming around in my brain.

If you go into the woods today.
So this is just a little piece i've created in my sketchbook to play with acrylic paints. I'll be working on characterisation next.

Patterns in nature
After completing my painting of Owly moth, i've been experimenting in Photoshop with patterns and wallpaper designs using his beautiful wings. It's a really fun and exciting process and i'm pleased with some of the results, particularly the limitless avenues I could take my designs through.
Playing with the colour pallette is also very inspiring, and I've found this process useful in giving me new ideas for future projects.
I hope you like some of the results. :)

Malayan tree mouse says: meep meep
As you may or may not know, I am participating in the Sketchbook project this year. Here is a link if you want to find out more about it: http://www.arthousecoop.com/
I chose the title: A path through the woods, it being in keeping with the majority of my work which is largely inspired by nature, animals and the woodland. I hope to use this project to experiment with new techniques, improve old ones, and work out ideas for existing commissions and projects I'm currently working on.
The Malayan tree mouse you see above was drawn using watercolour pencils, one of my favourite mediums to work in.
I'll continue to post my pieces of work over the coming weeks and hope you enjoy them. Feel free to leave any feedback or comments you may have, it's always nice to hear from other artists and creature lovers.
